Good to Know:

  • The name “Minas Gerais” translates to General Mines and was given to the region due to its great mineral wealth.
  • Minas Gerais has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other state in Brazil.

  • All of the towns we will stop in along the way are best explored on foot.
  • You’ll visit one of them: the picturesque village of Ouro Preto. It is a protected site for its incredible Baroque architecture.
  • Visit during the Semana Santa (Holy Week of Easter) to see the historic towns of Minas Gerais light up with colorful processions and lots of celebrations.

  • The region is also known for being one of Brazil’s calmest and most conservative places. The mineiros (the locals) are said to be introspective and friendly.
  • The weather in Minas Gerais always requires sturdy shoes and jackets for those exploring the area. Summers are warm but rainy and winters are dry but cooler.
